Close to 200 public-minded individuals joined hands to form a human chain on Sunday evening along the Cauvery bridge to express solidarity with Gandhian Anna Hazare for ridding India of corruption with the Jan Lokpal Bill.
Sporting badges and wrist bands, waving the tricolour, and holding placards with descriptions inspiring patriotism, they responded spontaneously to a call made in the morning by the Tiruchi Chapter of India Against Corruption (IAC).
Expressing their disgust with corruption in the country, they demanded a strong and powerful legislation to create a clean and corruption-free India.
They urged the government to seriously consider the provisions of the Jan Lokpal Bill, and resolved to vote in future for a government which was serious about corruption. Stating that the “toothless” Lokpal Bill proposed by the government will only protect the corrupt, the participants demanded a Lokayukta for Tamil Nadu.
On Saturday evening, a candle-light procession organised by the IAC in Srirangam attracted nearly 200 participants.
Another candle-light procession will be organised at 6.00 p.m. on Wednesday from Gandhi Market to Teppakulam Post Office via Big Bazaar and N.S.B. Road, said Muthukumar Ramalingam, Coordinator, IAC Tiruchi. It will be preceded by a fast observed by members of Vivekananda Foundation based in Srirangam.
The India Against Corruption Movement in Tiruchi has received enthusiastic response from the people. There are now nearly 1,000 members and the number was rising by the day. Individuals have been receiving regular updates by registering their email ID with www.iactrichy.org.
